You are currently viewing Bach: St John Passion

In 1724, Bach’s St John Passion was heard for the first time, on Good Friday in the church of St Nicholas in Leipzig. This March it comes to our St Nicholas, on the eve of Holy Week, performed by the Lea Singers with a full professional orchestra and outstanding soloists, under the direction of Benjamin Kirk.

It is one of the most dramatic works Bach ever wrote. The Evangelist tells the story, the soloists pause to reflect on it, and the choir switches between the furious crowd demanding a verdict and the congregation singing chorales of quiet, devastating simplicity. St Matthew Passion fans may disagree about which is Bach’s greatest, but they’re very welcome to come and argue with us in the interval.
